@Daniel: Now I totally get why no one commented on a finished song I posted; (1) didn't flag it and (2) it was finished, didn't know the group etiquette. At the time we really did want feedback on the finished song though, but thanks for letting me know that.
@ToryCreek: I would think provided it's largely Christian in content, and so long as you flag it as "not intended for praise and worship" that would be OK (important to flag it, so that you don't get comments like, "I can't see a congregation singing this").
Only thing that annoys me is when people submit songs that are clearly "finished", where they don't really want feedback.
To Marcia below, your songs are copyrighted the moment you create them, and if you have recordings or other versions that show a date in some way, then that helps to back up your claim of ownership. Submitting them to CCLI is a great public way of saying "these songs are mine" and you may even get some royalties down the road if other churches start using them and reporting them. CCLI only needs lyrics and the key to start with. In fact, even if you give them sheet music, they won't post it for a long time (unless you're famous...). As for the government copyright office, that's a great idea and good to have in your pocket, should someone else question your claim. But my point is, the song is yours, right now, even if you did nothing else.
There have been some good forum discussions on this topic here; you may want to go back and read them - lots of good tips in there.
Tricia: Thank you. Since posting the question, I got confirmation from the Lord not to go with SongRegistration.com., which your comment is even more confirmation. I appreciate very much the information you have provided here. I did not know about putting songs on CCLI. I use CCLI, but did not think about putting them there. As I said, I am very new to all of this. Do you know if I have to have sheet music for my songs when I copyright them? All I have right now are chord charts and cd recordings. Thank you very much.
Just moved to Tampa, any musicians want to join up for a drink and play, that would be righteous!
