My name is Shong Vang. I was born on November 8, 1989 and I've been a Christian all of my life. I currently attend Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL, and I am studying in Business Non-profit management/Ministry. My lifetime goal is to establish a worship house here in Chicago for Christians everywhere to visit. I also hope to write worship songs that will be someday be used by millions of Christians all over the world.
Since the age of 8, I have been playing drums. We had a little 6 piece set in our basement that I used to play around with. I never thought I'd be serious about playing. When I was 12, I went to a conference called Hlub, where my brother was drumming. I never experienced such a giant worship session with thousands of people and the worship was life changing. That is when I decided to take drumming seriously.
I formed a band when I was 12 years old. I played drums and I hoped that one day we too, would play for a big Christian conference like Hlub. However, after 2 years, our band separated, but I still wanted to do something for God. I decided to start learning how to play guitar and leading worship on my own. I figured that if I didn't have a band to help me lead worship, I would take it upon myself to do worship. A year later, I led worship for my youth. It was one of the greatest feelings I've ever had. Leading worship and bringing people to Christ was the only thing on my mind. I wanted to start another band, but in order to do so, I would have to learn bass as well. Bass was very easy, as it related to guitar. I also bought my own electric guitar gear, pedals, and amps, and I even took a few piano classes so I could do synth every now and then.
After learning all this, my best friend Simon Yang and I created a new band, and together, we taught bass players how to play bass, guitar players how to play guitar, and drummers how to play drums. We had a few worship gigs and a few really awesome worship sessions. However, we separated as well, and now I fill in for my church worship team in whichever instrument they need me to play. Many times I will lead worship too, and even though I do not have a band to call my own. God continues to call me into worship. I live to worship God, and I know that He has called us all to do great things.
