Rejoice In The Lord Always!

Philippians 4:4

A mindless sense of well being that ignores what is going on around you is not what Paul has in mind when he tells the Philippians to Rejoice In The Lord Always. The letter he writes to them is filled with recognition of difficult circumstances that they are all facing. In the opening words of the letter Paul acknowledges his own situation as a prisoner facing execution. A little later he…

Word Like Fire Episode 20: O Word of God Incarnate

Download/stream the podcast here- Episode 20: O Word of God Incarnate

This week’s song uses a hymn text written by William W. How in 1867 with a new tune. It is a prayer of thanksgiving to God both for the gift of his word in the scriptures- and how they illuminate Christ, the

Word made flesh.

O Word of God…

Anos no deserto / Years in the desert (English/Portuguese)

Continue

Minister To 'Your People'?

‘Minister to Your People.’ That is what my husband was told back in the late 1990’s, on his journey to follow the path God had placed in his heart. Since he is a man of Hispanic heritage, for most, it would make sense that he would lead a solely Hispanic congregation. But who exactly are ‘our people’ to a Puerto Rican man and a Polish/Bulgarian/Who Knows What Else woman with African-American and Vietnamese foster children?

Starting out, my husband was told by… Continue

Had Breakfast with a Hummingbird This Morning!

I walked out back and stood there eating a banana and looked to my right. There was this beautiful hummingbird going from flower to flower in the back yard. After it was finished sapping from the flowers, it flew up in front of me, fluttered a bit (as if to say goodbye), and flew away. I thank God for sending a little friend with whom to enjoy breakfast on a wonderful morning!

Busy or Busybody?

We hear that some among you are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. -2 Thessalonians 3:1-12

While this verse may be dealing with the importance of working for a living, it speaks to me on another level as well. The temptation to be a busybody- to gossip, criticize, and take other’s hard work for granted- is ever present, and can sometimes be subtle. Being a musician, it’s easy for me to slip… Continue

I guess I can blog.

Hey. I just saw this blog item and I am trying it out. Now for some real meat and potatoes. I just joined a blues band playing drums and I like it a lot. It is Christian based and we'll be playing at a Gospel Fest 2009 in Hutto, Texas. So far, I love playing with these guys. It is a big contrast in music and social relationship to the worship team I am on.

David understood God's heart!

People can have the best talent and most perfect voice but if the anointing isnt there its just a another song... We sometimes sing simple songs and there again is that "Awesomeness" that makes it. As child of God we know that it is the anointing that rest upon the artist, words and song...But many times I wonder what David saw when he worshipped God and what God saw when He heard David's song.

Did he have a great voice?

Did he sing like Josh Groban?

Did David play the harp… Continue

Ame o Senhor (Diante do Trono)

Ame o Senhor, apegue-se a Ele

Disto depende a tua vida

Disto depende a tua família

Disto depende a tua vida...

(Deuteronômio 11, Composição: Ana Paula Valadão Bessa, Diante do Trono)

Às vezes a música pode golpeá-lo gosta do relâmpago, no canto o mais profundo de seu coração. Assim, esta música, composta e cantada por Ana Paula Valadão Bessa, movido meu coração em uma maneira eu nunca soube antes. Abriu meu coração e moveu-me.… Continue

Play skillfully unto the Lord

Psalm 33:3 Sing to him a new song; play skilfully, and shout for joy.

When I was about 8 years old, I had my first music lesson. First I learned to play the Trombone and tuba (euphonium), until I was about 16 year of age. When I was 17 I had my first guitar lesson, After 'playing around' a few years. I was lucky to have a very good teacher, his name was Fred van Houdt. I didn't know the Lord, since I wasn't raised Christian. After quite a few years of drug addiction and… Continue

Instrumentation can be a tricky thing when writing worship music. As a songwriter, it’s easy to let a song be driven by an instrumental hook. As a composer, it’s fun to layer instrumental parts. As a music director, you are limited by the instrumentalists on your team, and by their skill levels. I try to ask myself a few questions as I’m writing: Is this song relying on its accompaniment to be effective? Would it work with only guitar, only piano, or even a cappella? Are the instruments… Continue

Part 2 - Is Faith actually a form of Knowlege?

One of the ideas that has been ingrained in us is the idea that faith happens in the absence of knowledge. Alvin Plantinga quotes Mark Twain "faith is believing what you know ain't true". We talk of a 'leap of faith' and easily accept that faith is the opposite of reason.

And what has been the result? A contempt from the intellectual and scientific community towards those who have faith in God. If I understood that faith walks hand in hand with ignorance and was divorced from reason,… Continue

God Sings!

He Will Rejoice Over You With Singing

Zephaniah 3:17

Did you know that God is a singer? Why would that be a surprise? He created us to sing; one would expect that He has some experience at it Himself. Yes, the Lord of all creation sings. That defies our image of the frozen-faced, always-disappointed God of high expectations. Sure, we have failed Him and our love is far too cold for such a lovely Lord. But that's not what the Lord of glory… Continue
