I have a new favourite song-du-jour. Downhere's The Beggar Who Gives Alms from their "Ending is Beginning" album.

There are no mystic jewels embedded in my prose
No moonlit haloed cherubs perched on my piano
No lyrics laced with pixy dust, no angels sing along
I am just a beggar who gives alms

Gold and silver have I none, but such I have give Thee
Borrowed words from the One who gave the gift to me
The pearl that I could never buy, this life, this dream, this song
And I am just a beggar who gives alms

I am not the creator, but a scribe with a pen
I'm recreating visions through a cracked and broken lens
Only One has ever seen the home for which we long
And I am just a beggar who gives alms

I have written a couple of songs, but have no illusions of being a songwriter. All the same, this song resonates with my experience. The line about recreating visions through a cracked and broken lens fits me to a tee. On occasion some little snatch of lyric or tune will bounce around in my skull, and I will try and transcribe it. The only ones that seem to do anything are the ones I have the least "writing" and the most "listening" when transcribing.

It is pretty obvious to me that I'm not doing this on my own...so when this beggar is given some words or tune, I have to turn it back to God...
