The Place of Fear and Reverence in Worship

The idea of worship is that one prostrates himself before a superior being with an attitude of awe, respect, honour and homage. It is amazing the things that can be unlocked just through reverence.

“Let us worship with reverence and awe for our God is a consuming fire”. Hebrews 12:29

Reverence means to show respect or fear, a common way in Israel to show reverence was “falling down,” “lying on the ground facedown” as prostration of the body showing that the one you bow to is superior to you.

Fear is a regard with feelings of respect and reverence or considering hallowed or exalted or be in awe of and the word simply states that “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil” Proverbs 8:13. Fear of the Lord is living a life which not only hates but is free of sin.

God is God and we are to worship God with our hearts and our spirits full and overflowing with the fear of the Lord. God is friend and a Father but when we come to worship shall we still worship Him as friend or buddy? He is God in all we do. We ought to give him his precedence as the God over our lives and above all things

“You that fear the Lord praise Him”, Psalms 22:23

Worship is submission to a higher authority (God’s) with reverential hearts. You lay your life to give God what he deserves which is worship and give him honour and reverence.

The Amplified Bible has uses the word FEAR in the bible and in the place of the word WORSHP. If you are walking in reverence and fear of God you are indeed  worshipping God “Those who reverently {and} worshipfully fear You will see me and be glad, because I have hoped in Your word{and} tarried for it”. Psalms 119:74

One interesting thing about fear is that it results in knowledge and revelation to the one who walks in it, if we are going to be worshippers that please the Lord we need to learn to live in fear because how can we worship the Lord without knowing Him. Fear brings revelation and knowledge of the God we worship.

You cannot worship Him without living a life of reverence or  walk in the fear of the Lord. We honour and respect the people of the earth but we walk in such apathy and numbness to God, how come? Worship is driven and fuelled by reverence and fear of the one you worship.

“Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; Worship The LORD In The Beauty Of Holiness”, Psalms 29:2
